JCAYA junior riders Rhys Pilley (18) & Sabine Minchinton-Gilley (16) are racing in
France this season for CC Plancoet. Both will be contesting the junior calendar on the
road and Sabine will also be continuing to balance both road and track racing this
Rhys has the opportunity to be part of a junior team racing the Federal calendar. His
first race was the 32 nd edition of the prestigious La Ronde du Printemps, which has
taken place since 1985; previous junior winners have gone on to become
professionals. Coach, Lynn Minchinton, says, “ Rhys has a lot of potential and when
asked by the club to recommend a male junior rider who could fit into their team
structure he was the obvious choice; I feel racing regularly in France will further
develop his skills and provide him with opportunities for the future.” Only 82 of the
195 riders finished the 119kms race; however Rhys was able to reach the finishing
circuit having completed 99kms but the organisers only allowed the break away
groups to remain. The main break went early in to the race and managed to stay away
never allowing the chasers to get back. This was a huge learning curve to adjust to
being part of a team and the number of riders entered; for his first race the team
manager was very pleased with him and he is due back in France next weekend for
the prestigious Penn ar Bed stage race.
Sabine rode the 50km road race on the same finishing circuit as the junior men, which
had a 600m climb ranging from 6% to 9%, which took its toll on many of the cadet
boys and junior girls with having to climb it ten times; not known for being a climber
she displayed determination to finish 5 th girl but just outside the top 50 overall
receiving praise from the club for her improved climbing skill in this her first race.
Both riders wish to thank: Plan2coaching, Healthhaus, CCC, JCAYA, Pedal Power
and Mark Pickford Cycles for ongoing support.
