The Academy

Historically the cycling clubs in Jersey, Ceasarean Cycling Club (CCC) & Velo Sport Jersey (VSJ) clubs have provided development programmes for younger riders as follows:-

  • Off road Mountain Bike (MTB) series organised by CCC - Winter and Summer race series on private land owner courses; and
  • Coaching & road racing organised by VSJ – mainly at the Le Quennavais track.

The two programmes are very successful and much credit must go to the clubs and sponsors involved, and particularly to the relatively small number of individuals who willingly devote their valuable time and expertise to the development of others.

During 2009 the current situation in Jersey and elsewhere particularly in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey was reviewed and CCC & VSJ recognised the need for major change. A briefing paper was presented to the JCA in September 2009, which recommended the formation of a JCA Youth Academy (YA) and this concept was agreed by the JCA and fully endorsed by the cycling clubs. A management committee has been put together which is detailed under the Contact tab.

We accept that cycling is not an inexpensive activity at any level and that we will achieve our aims and goals in the shortest period of time by involving a sponsor(s) as a development partner in the project. We are therefore delighted that Moore Management has committed to supporting the Academy over the next 3 year and we look forward to working with them.

Cycling in general has never been higher on the States agenda in terms of recognised health benefits, easing traffic congestion and positive impact on pollution. Competitive cycling is increasing in popularity all around the world and cyclists compete through a number of disciplines in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and Island Games.

The time has never been better for Jersey to put itself on the cycling map by offering our young people the opportunity to maximise the benefits/opportunities offered by riding a bike.
